## Caption

My parents moved from Guyana to Canada on Canada Day with nothing but a crate holding everything they owned. 

They left Guyana to build a life they couldn’t build there. They lived through political unrest, watched their family home burn down during the riots and grew up in a country carrying the economic and social legacy of colonialism and indentureship. 
Educational opportunities, especially for girls, were limited and they wanted something different for their future family. 

So they stared over in a new country with new jobs, an entirely new culture with new obstacles, and a new freezing cold climate! 

They did all of that so my sisters brother and I could have choices they never had. 

I’m incredibly grateful they took that leap.
