Beach renourishment helps protect our shoreline, supports coastal wildlife, and keeps our beaches healthy for residents and visitors alike. But have you ever wondered how the renourishment process works in Venice?

1. Beach-quality sand, found approximately 11 nautical miles south of Venice Beach, is sourced to match the native beach material in terms of grain size, color, and composition.

2. Sand is dredged from the Gulf floor and pumped through a hydraulic pipeline to the beach, where it is placed to help restore the shoreline.

3. Sand is carefully placed along the beach in 1,000- to 1,500-foot sections and shaped to create a wide, gently sloping protective berm. Dunes are then constructed for added storm protection and planted with native dune grasses to help stabilize the sand.

4. Permitted wildlife experts relocate newly laid sea turtle nests each morning to safe locations outside the active construction area, helping protect the nests while beach renourishment continues. 🐢🥚
