How does a story survive for almost 1,400 years? Not just in books, but in streets, rituals, architecture, and the memories of millions of people I often find myself thinking about the idea of collective memory, and nowhere does it feel more tangible than in Karbala. From the bullet marks that remain on the shrine, to decades of restrictions on pilgrimage, the memory of a man who stood against oppression continues to echo across centuries. Each generation returns to the same places, retraces the same paths, and reimagines the same story through the lens of its own struggles. In that sense, Karbala is not just “remembered,” it is continuously recreated, allowing people to place themselves in the past as a way of confronting the present. #karbala #iraq #shia #arbaeen #history
