The Bortle Scale measures how dark the night sky is, ranging from Class 1 with pristine, star filled skies to Class 9 in brightly lit cities where only the brightest stars are visible. Artificial lights from streets, buildings, and vehicles scatter in the atmosphere, creating light pollution that washes out faint celestial objects. Darker skies reveal far more stars, the Milky Way, nebulae, and distant galaxies that city lights often hide.
