Evolution does not work with a goal in mind. An animal never decides to evolve into something else. Instead, random genetic mutations constantly create small differences in appearance, and natural selection determines which ones survive. 

In the ancestors of the Atlas moth, some mutations slightly changed the colors, shapes, and patterns near the wing tips. At first, they did not resemble cobras at all. But if a pattern made a bird or monkey hesitate for even a moment, that moth had a better chance of surviving and reproducing. Over millions of years, countless small mutations accumulated, with each generation refining the illusion. 

Eventually, those random changes produced wing tips that convincingly resemble the heads of two snakes, helping deter predators.
