Found in warm coastal waters, rivers, and estuaries, manatees can grow up to 4 metres (13 feet) long and weigh more than 500 kg (1,100 lbs). Despite their size, they are gentle herbivores with no natural predators as adults. They spend much of the day eating and resting, consuming up to 10% of their body weight in vegetation every day.⁠

Although they appear slow, manatees are surprisingly agile and can swim at speeds of around 15 mph (24 km/h) in short bursts. They rely on warm water to survive and often gather around natural springs or power plant outflows during colder months. Today, manatees are protected in many parts of the world, with conservation efforts focusing on reducing boat strikes, protecting habitats, and preserving the seagrass beds they depend on.⁠
