The heavy ball low-roll drill forces players to stay in a low, wide athletic stance by making the body act as a shield.

By dribbling a basketball while simultaneously rolling a heavy medicine ball, players are forced to maintain a low center of gravity, engage their core, and keep their shoulders down to protect the ball.

Why the Heavy Ball Roll Teaches the Perfect StanceThe mechanics of this drill naturally translate to game-ready ball handling and protection:

Forces a Wide, Low Stance: Keeping the ball rolling back and forth on the floor requires deep knee flexion and dropped hips.

If a player stands up straight, they will lose control of the heavy ball or will be unable to reach it.

Builds Core and Shoulder Strength: Rolling a heavier object requires more force and stability from the upper body and core, making the standard basketball feel incredibly light and quick when returning to regular drills.

Teaches the “Off-Arm” Shield: Rolling the heavy ball acts as a physical reminder to use the non-dribbling arm as a guard, protecting the live dribble from hypothetical defenders. Longer, Quicker Strides:

Integrating lunging movements with the drill improves a player’s stride length on drives, letting them cover more ground past defenders while staying low and explosive.
