Danny Wuerffel turned the Georgia Dome into his personal stage on December 7, 1996, torching the Alabama defense for one of the most prolific performances in SEC Championship Game history as No. 2 Florida outlasted No. 3 Alabama, 45-30, to claim their fourth consecutive conference title.

Wuerffel, in the midst of a Heisman Trophy-winning senior campaign, was nearly unstoppable through the air. He threw for an SEC Championship Game-record 401 yards and six touchdowns, shredding an Alabama defense that had entered the contest ranked sixth nationally. It was a statement performance against a unit that few expected to be torn apart so thoroughly. 

His top target all afternoon was sophomore receiver Reidel Anthony, who turned in a game for the ages. Anthony hauled in three touchdown catches — a mark that still stands as an SEC Championship Game record — finishing with 11 receptions for 171 yards. Fellow receiver Ike Hilliard gave Florida's "Fun 'n' Gun" attack another dangerous weapon on the outside, rounding out a passing game that Alabama simply had no answer for.

Alabama didn't go quietly. The Crimson Tide's offense kept pace for stretches, and the two teams combined to set a new scoring record for the game at the time, with 75 total points lighting up the scoreboard. But Florida's aerial assault proved too much to overcome, and the Gators pulled away to seal their fourth straight SEC crown.

The victory carried extra weight beyond the trophy. The Gators wouldn't be denied; they went on to dismantle rival Florida State 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl, capturing the program's first national championship and sending Wuerffel out as a Heisman winner and a national champion.
