Mike Tyson was scheduled to appear on WWF television 8 years before he actually did. Tyson was set to be the special guest referee for Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Savage at The Main Event on NBC on February 23, 1990. Twelve days before the show, Buster Douglas knocked Tyson out in Tokyo, Tyson pulled out, and Douglas took his referee spot. Behind the scenes, Don King and Vince McMahon had reportedly discussed a Hogan vs. Tyson pay-per-view worth around $100 million, talks Bruce Prichard later confirmed were real.

Hogan talked about the match openly at the time. In March 1991, he and Tyson crossed paths on The Arsenio Hall Show, days after Tyson beat Razor Ruddock, and shared a staredown. 

On the show, Hogan told Arsenio: "Mike and I talked about this thing. Everybody's interested what would happen if Mike Tyson and Hulk Hogan would lock up." He laid out the plan as champion vs. champion: "Once I get the WWF title and Mike Tyson gets his shot back in his title, we're going to sit down and talk about this thing." 

Hogan put a number on it, saying they could charge "$20 million for each TV set, because everybody would want to see who's the real champion of the world, Hulk Hogan or Mike Tyson."

In an earlier Arsenio appearance, Hogan had joked about how a fight with Tyson would have to work: "If they want to make the fight fair, they better put a pair of handcuffs on me." The match never happened, and Tyson would not appear in the WWF until January 1998 in a segment with Stone Cold Steve Austin to begin the build for WrestleMania XIV.
