Teachers have the chance to leave an impression that lasts well beyond any one school year.

When we read through the nominations for Mr. Samuel Lopez Perez, one detail kept appearing: students don’t forget him when they leave his classroom.

Of course they talked about the projects, the laughter, and the way he made Spanish class something to look forward to. But they also wrote about the years afterward. Families shared that he continued checking in, encouraging students, and celebrating their successes long after they had moved on.

One former student wrote that Mr. Lopez helped them find the confidence to speak in front of others. Another family said his encouragement changed the way their child saw themselves as a learner.

Those are the kinds of investments that keep paying off.
