## Caption

Bruised, tired, and still a bit defeated, we made it to downtown Kansas City on our World Cup road trip. 

And by the end of that morning, we knew we had dozens of stories we’d someday tell our grandkids.

Just a few weeks ago, we’d had the chance to walk through the Power and Light district on a quiet Sunday morning, imagining what it might look like during the World Cup… but not even in our wildest dreams did we think it could turn into what we saw.

Over 30,000 people—Dutch fans and eager locals—marching hand in hand through the narrow streets of downtown Kansas City. A sea of orange as far as the eye could see. 

We overslept a little after long days of driving, so we started at the very back of the crowd with the mission of trying to capture as much as possible from this historic occasion. At one point, we just got swept up by the current and let it take us wherever it chose to.

Doing the iconic Links Rechts in between old brick buildings (while hundreds of fans climbed to nearby rooftops just to get a glimpse of the whole walk) is a type of thrill I think I’ll be seeking for the rest of my life. I don’t even want to think about Tyler, who talked his way into getting on top of the famous Dutch Orange Bus leading the march. 

By the end of it all, Dutch fans had painted my face, my nails, and given me a bandana to blend in. That’s what I get for not wearing orange off the bat. Wish I’d gotten all of their names, but I got dragged in another direction knowing I’d met some of the friendliest people ever. 

Once it was all over and the three of us reconvened, it really began to sink in that we’re living through a historic occasion. Maybe we hadn’t had enough of a chance to breathe until that day. Maybe there’s a bit of introspective clarity that comes following moments of frantic chaos. Something we definitely needed after our bus broke down at the start of the WC.

I guess our time with the Dutch showed us that letting go is often the best medicine.
