NOTE TO CLINICIANS

Regardless of the information being published in medical journals today, #akathisia is NOT rare and many are dying by suicide. If a patient tells you they have akathisia, PLEASE err on the side of caution and believe them. These people are so desperate to survive it that they research on PubMed and Google Scholar because their doctors didn't have the answers they needed to survive. They learn about akathisia, a word you may not have previously heard, because they are desperately trying to prevent further torture with psychotropic medications, involuntary hospitalizations, and the loss of everything and everyone they love because they cannot get a diagnosis. We have seen this happen over and over and over in the support groups. There have been a shocking number of suicides, at least 58 in one small support group since 2018. When combined with the support groups for benzodiazepine withdrawal, psychotropic medication withdrawal, and antiemetic drug support groups, etc., in which akathisia is also common, there have been hundreds. This is in stark contrast to the handful of cases that have been published to date. If you are concerned about suicide prevention, we hope you will address this immediately. We hope you will be willing to listen and learn from your patients who claim to have akathisia. Too many are being misdiagnosed and irreparably harmed by doctors who will not believe them, and ultimately dying by suicide instead. Thank you
