Chickens don’t have medical degrees, but they do have instincts that would surprise most people. 🐔 Researchers have documented something called self-medication in chickens and other animals. When given the opportunity to forage, chickens don’t just eat whatever is closest to them. They often seek out specific insects, plants, and behaviors that appear to meet a need. Need extra protein? They’ll hunt bugs. Dealing with external pests? You’ll often see them taking dust baths. Given access to pasture, they can become incredibly selective about what they peck at and where they spend their time. It’s a good reminder that animals are often far more intuitive than we give them credit for. One more reason it’s important to spend time watching the flock because you learn something new from them every day! #poultry #chickens #backyardchickens #education #shilohfarm
