Born in Ilford, then part of Essex (now the London Borough of Redbridge), Dev Hynes has repeatedly returned to his upbringing in his music. Songs like “High Street” reference Ilford Lane, “Dagenham Dream” recalls violence he experienced growing up, and his 2025 album Essex Honey is an explicit reflection on grief, memory, and his relationship with Essex after returning home following his mother’s death.

Although born in Cambridge, Charli XCX was raised in Start Hill, Essex, where she began writing songs as a teenager before sneaking out to perform at London’s warehouse raves. Her success has made her one of Essex’s most internationally influential pop artists, while her DIY beginnings in rural Essex helped shape the fearless, internet-first approach that later defined her career.

Damon Albarn spent much of his childhood in Fordstreet, near Colchester, and later attended school in Stanway, Essex, where he met future Blur guitarist Graham Coxon. Essex formed the backdrop to the beginnings of Blur, making the county an essential part of one of Britain’s most influential bands before Albarn went on to create Gorillaz.

Fakemink is from Essex and has become one of the county’s most prominent new artists, although he moved to London to pursue music more seriously, inspiring the name behind his 2023 debut album ‘London’s Saviour.’ He also references the county several times on his new album ‘Terrified,’ on songs like “Essex Girls” and “Forget Me Not.”

Jessie J was born and raised in Chadwell Heath, historically part of Essex and now within the London Borough of Redbridge. Before becoming a global pop star, she trained at the BRIT School while proudly representing her
