Greek World - Warfare

Armor and Weapons

•	Helmets: Made of bronze, these were often crested with horsehair or boar’s tusks for intimidation and recognition. They protected the head while sometimes featuring cheek plates for additional protection.

•	Shields: Large and circular, made from layers of ox-hide with a bronze covering, the shields were a crucial part of a warrior’s defense. The design allowed for protection of most of the body. Some shields, like those of the Myrmidons led by Achilles, were described as being uniquely shaped or decorated.

•	Breastplates: Bronze breastplates were common, protecting the chest and back. Some descriptions suggest they were intricately decorated and could be quite elaborate for heroes or leaders.

•	Greaves: Shaped bronze armor that protected the lower legs, fitting over the calves.

•	Spears and Javelins: The primary offensive weapons, used for throwing and thrusting. Spears were especially valued in phalanx formations.

•	Swords: Bronze swords were shorter than modern swords, used as secondary weapons in close combat. The design was ideal for slashing and thrusting.

War Tactics

•	Phalanx Formation: Although more commonly associated with later Greek warfare, the principles of tightly packed, shield-bearing infantry moving as a unit can be found in “The Iliad.” This formation maximized the protective coverage of shields and allowed for a collective advance or defense.

•	Single Combat: Heroic duels between champions of the opposing sides were common, often to settle disputes, avenge fallen comrades, or prove supremacy. These encounters were highly ritualized, with exchanges of insults, declarations of lineage, and formal challenges.
