Let that number sink in.
More than 130 women and teenage girls have been found D€∆D in a single New Mexico county in just five years. During the term of one sheriff. Kim Stewart.
Not one organized search by that sheriff's department to look for the missing.
Instead, humanitarian volunteers have walked mile after mile through the desert, finding the D€∆D that others never searched for.
Women have been found side by side, D¥lNG on the same day in the same place.
Other locations have yielded women again... and again... and again. Two. Three. Four. Weeks or months apart.
Yet the overwhelming explanation remains the same:
Exposure. Exposure. Exposure.
Where are the questions?
Where is the urgency?
Where are the investigations into why so many young women are D¥lNG in the same remote corridor?
Where is the accountability?
We have witnessed hostility toward volunteers. We have documented repeated failures to recover all human remains. We have watched concern be met with silence instead of action.
These were not statistics.
They were daughters.
They were sisters.
They were mothers.
They were loved.
More than 130 women deserved to make it home.
Instead, many were left exposed on the New Mexico desert floor, waiting for someone to find them.
History will remember what happened here.
And it will remember who chose to look away.
