Between 1776 and 1930, Native nations across North America lost the vast majority of their ancestral lands through a combination of treaties, forced removals, warfare, and federal policies designed to open territory for U.S. expansion. Early agreements were often negotiated under pressure or later broken, while policies such as the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Dawes Act of 1887 systematically transferred millions of acres from Indigenous control to the federal government and private settlers.

By the early 20th century, most Native communities had been confined to reservations that represented only a fraction of their original territories. This transformation reshaped not only geography but also economic systems, governance, and cultural continuity. Despite this, Native nations maintained identity, language, and traditions, adapting to imposed boundaries while preserving connections to land that long predated the formation of the United States.
