This is the last suviving building in Franklinton tied to its founder ➡️

It was used as a modest land office built by Lucas Sullivant in 1822, around 25 years after he founded Franklinton.

At first, attracting residents wasn’t easy. Flooding and disease prevented the area's immediate growth, so Sullivant had to give away some of his lots (on Gift Street) in order to encourage people to settle there. Word spread quickly, and soon, Franklinton was bustling.

The office building stood on West Gay Street for more than 150 years, but it faced threats of demolition in the 1970s and 1980s.

In a 1973 application to the National Register of Historic Places, the applicant writes: “Unfortunately, the present owner does not seem to be at all interested in the historic nature of the building... Gross neglect might sum up his treatment of this significant building.”

It was quickly listed to the National Register, and in 1983, it was relocated to Gift Street, where it still stands today.

It remains the only surviving structure in the Franklinton area directly associated with Sullivant.

In 2021, the City of Columbus transferred ownership of the Sullivant Land Office site to the Columbus Historical Society (cbushistory), who maintains the building and offers tours by appointment.
