One year ago today, HUNTR/X released ‘GOLDEN’ as a single. Golden is the anthem performed by the fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X (Huntrix) in Netflix's animated film KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, which premiered June 20, 2025. Directors Kang and Appelhans and producer Michelle Wong asked for something nearly impossible: a song catchy and soulful enough that audiences would believe it could summon that barrier, while also carrying real narrative weight — introducing each character's personal struggle, revealing that lead singer Rumi is secretly half-demon, and landing a hook powerful enough to serve as the film's emotional climax.

'GOLDEN' became a runaway real-world hit almost immediately. It shot to number one on the Billboard Global 200 and topped charts in more than 30 countries, including South Korea, the UK, and the US, eventually selling over 10 million copies worldwide and earning 2x Platinum certification or higher in eight countries. The soundtrack as a whole hit No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and on August 18, 2025, Billboard noted that HUNTR/X and the film's rival boy band, the Saja Boys, together claimed four of the top five spots on the Billboard Global 200 — a feat only matched a handful of times since the chart launched, mostly by Taylor Swift and Drake.

It won the Critics' Choice Award, the Golden Globe, and the Academy Award for Best Original Song, making it the first K-pop song ever to win an Oscar. At the 68th Grammy Awards it picked up four nominations, including Song of the Year, and won Best Song Written for Visual Media — the first Grammy ever awarded to a K-pop song. Its influence extended into the industry's broader embrace of fictional-but-vocally-authentic pop groups
