12 years ago, Meghan Trainor released her debut single, "All About That Bass," on June 30, 2014, through Epic Records as the lead single from her debut EP and later album, *Title*. Before becoming a pop star, Trainor worked primarily as a songwriter in Nashville and believed her body type would prevent her from becoming a recording artist. Inspired by her own teenage struggles with body image and self-acceptance, she wrote the song as a fun, relatable anthem promoting confidence and self-love.

Trainor co-wrote the track with producer Kevin Kadish during their very first writing session, completing it in just 40 minutes. Kadish had originally written the phrase "All About That Bass" as a possible hip-hop title, but Trainor reimagined it into a female empowerment anthem, using "bass" as a metaphor for body curves. Several record labels rejected the demo because they wanted to modernize its retro sound with synthesizers. Epic Records chairman L.A. Reid, however, signed Trainor immediately after hearing her perform it on a ukulele and decided to release the original demo unchanged.

Directed by Fatima Robinson, the colorful music video became a viral sensation. Featuring pastel pink sets, a playful 1950s-inspired aesthetic, and internet personality Sione Kelepi, it became Vevo's second most-streamed video of 2014 while helping spark conversations about body diversity in mainstream media.

The song became one of the decade's biggest hits, spending eight consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a then-record for the longest-running chart-topper in Epic Records history. It later became the highest-selling digital song by a female artist in the U.S. during the 2010s, earned Diamond certification from the RIAA, topped the charts in more than 18 countries, and became the first UK top-40 hit powered entirely by streaming. Memorable performances on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon* using classroom instruments and at the CMA Awards with Miranda Lambert helped cement Trainor's arrival as a global pop star.
