“is this land made for you and me?”...

most people only know the first few verses of “this land is your land.” it makes sense … we were taught it as a camp song and it feels joyful to sing it. 

what most people don’t know is woody guthrie wrote verses that never made it onto the record. one about walking a line of hungry people outside a relief office, wondering if this land was made for him too. another about a sign that said private property, and on the other side, nothing said that... that side was made for you and me.

he wrote this as an answer song. an answer to a country song he thought was too simple, too certain of its own blessing. that would be Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America”. he wanted something more honest. something that held the pride and the doubt in the same breath.

i was honored to be invited to 1stforall in DC to sing this for an event honoring our first amendment and champions of that right. janefonda’s 1acommittee , wolfblitzer and maria_ressa — all filled me with such purposeful hope that not all is lost. 

this land was never supposed to be a possession. it was supposed to be a promise. the kind you keep by looking out for the people standing next to you, especially the ones the country forgets first.

that’s the america i want to sing about. one that takes care of its neighbors. all of them.
