‘I wanted to use the name Navy in my son’s name in her honour.’

Little Azari Navy will never meet his great-grandmother, but through his middle name he will carry her legacy forever. 🖤💛❤️

Azari’s middle name pays tribute to his great-grandmother, Marjorie Tripp AO, a pioneering Ramindjeri elder and prominent South Australian community leader. At just 17 years old, Marjorie became the first Aboriginal woman to join the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service, at a time when Aboriginal people were not yet recognised as Australian citizens.

Marjorie went on to become a tireless champion for Indigenous veterans and aged care, earning an Order of Australia in 2014.

‘My grandmother Marjorie helped raise me and made me who I am today,’ said mum Renee.

Renee and partner Santa-Chris welcomed Azari via caesarean section at Proserpine Hospital in May, with the help of midwife Aleesha and obstetrician Dr Kyren.

‘Proserpine Hospital is such a beautiful place. All the staff are very kind, very supportive and they make it feel very homely. Nothing but genuine care.’

Congratulations Renee, Santa-Chris and big brother Amari. And welcome to the world, Azari. ❤️
