Ottawa experienced one of its most destructive Canada Days in recent memory after a historic storm dumped 110 mm of rain on the capital, breaking the previous July 1 rainfall record set in 1959.

The severe weather left a trail of destruction across the city. Homes and businesses reported flooded basements, vehicles were stranded or submerged on major roads, trees and hydro poles were brought down, thousands lost power, and emergency crews responded to countless weather-related incidents. 

Highway 417 and several major roads were heavily flooded, forcing closures and causing major traffic disruptions.

The storm also forced the cancellation of the national Canada Day evening show and fireworks at LeBreton Flats, along with celebrations in Kanata, Barrhaven, Stittsville, and Orléans. 

Ottawa International Airport temporarily suspended operations, leading to dozens of flight cancellations and delays.

As cleanup efforts continue, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe announced plans to waive building permit fees for residents rebuilding storm-damaged basements and temporarily suspend garbage limits in affected areas to help with cleanup.
