Google has lost its appeal against a record $4.7 billion antitrust fine, after Europe’s top court upheld penalties imposed over its Android mobile operating system practices.⁣
⁣
The ruling confirms findings that Google used Android agreements to force smartphone makers to pre-install its Search, Chrome and Play Store apps, and restricted access to rival systems. The European Commission originally issued the fine in 2018, later slightly reduced by a lower tribunal.⁣
⁣
Google said it disagrees with the ruling, arguing its agreements helped keep Android open and free, but confirmed it has already adapted its practices. ⁣
The decision is expected to strengthen Brussels’ wider crackdown on Big Tech under the Digital Markets Act.⁣
