During the 1980s and 1990s, Kmart went on a buying spree, acquiring bookstores, office supply chains, sporting goods retailers, and even international businesses. Management believed diversification would drive growth, but every dollar spent on acquisitions was a dollar not spent improving Kmart's core business. While Kmart chased new ventures, Walmart stayed focused on operations, pricing, and customer experience. In the end, Kmart sold off nearly all of its acquisitions and lost the retail war anyway.
