Most people fumble salary negotiations because they fear sounding greedy or losing the offer.

So they lowball themselves, ramble, or wait to see what’s offered.

That’s not an effective strategy.

Instead, use my 3C framework:

→ Stay Calm: No apology, no justifying.
​→ Be Clear: Say your number without fluff.
→ Be Compelling: Anchor to business value, not just what you want.

Use this script when you get the offer:

🗣 “Thank you. I’m genuinely excited about the offer and the opportunity to contribute at [Company]. Based on the scope of the role, market benchmarks, and the value I know I can bring, I was expecting something closer to [$X]. Is there flexibility to bring the offer in line with that?”

If they push back, hold your frame like this:

🗣 “I completely understand. How can we bridge the gap, whether through base, bonus, or other levers? I’m fully invested in making this a win-win.”

Pro tip: If they push you to give a number early on, make sure to give a range based on market data, not your previous salary. This could sound like:

🗣 “Based on my track record and market benchmarks for this role, I’m targeting a range of [$X–Y]. Happy to discuss how that fits within your comp structure.”

Remember, you don’t get what you deserve. You get what you ask for.

Say the number. Stop talking. Let it land.
