Fable 5 is back. But the deal that brought it back is what everyone should be watching.

After three weeks of government-forced shutdown, Fable 5 returned this week. But not quite the same.

Anthropic added a safety filter that sometimes routes normal requests — especially coding and debugging — to its older Opus 4.8 model instead. 

Which ones and why isn't fully spelled out.

But the bigger story is what Anthropic agreed to. Three things: 

1) Actively monitor security risks, 
2) Give government officials early access to future frontier models before they go public
3) Report malicious use directly to Washington.

If this becomes the pattern, it won't stop with Anthropic.
