Yes, politicians should learn to be civil and respectful rather than dehumanizing, to listen to the other side to understand the issues.

But even more important, politicians must focus on actually solving problems on behalf of the people they are meant to serve - rather than on scoring political points and amassing power for their party.

And the key to that is in the citizens. All of us need to set the tone of what we expect from politicians. We need to resist the normalization of antisocial behavior that tears at the fabric of our democracy.

Above all, we, the citizens, need to join forces to hold politicians accountable. We need to propel Builders over Destroyers, to demand structural changes that incentivize elected representatives to unite us rather than divide us, and to solve problems together rather than tear each other apart.

It starts with us.
