A Kaufman County Sheriff's deputy and a Forney police officer were nearly struck while working a crash on the freeway after a passing vehicle hit the patrol car.

Officials say it's a reminder that traffic stops and crash scenes are some of the most dangerous places for first responders.

Texas law requires drivers to:
- Move over one lane when possible
- If you can't, slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit (or 5 mph on roads posted at 25 mph or less)
