A few names you need to know:
🩸 Charles Richard Drew pioneered blood banking and saved countless lives during World War II, then resigned from the Red Cross in protest after the military ordered that blood be segregated by race, calling it "unscientific." blavity
💉 Marilyn Hughes Gaston's research proved that prophylactic penicillin could prevent fatal infections in children with sickle cell disease, leading directly to a national newborn screening program. blavity
🔬 Dr. David Satcher found that more than 886,000 Black Americans died preventable deaths between 1991 and 2000 simply because they did not receive the same care as white patients. blavity
❤️ Daniel Hale Williams performed one of the world's first open heart surgeries in 1893, without modern anesthesia, antibiotics, or blood transfusions. His patient lived for at least 20 more years.
