A mother kept it in the medicine cupboard for fifty years. She gave it to her children too. Invented by an army doctor in 1856, it was called Chlorodyne — opium, chloroform and cannabis, sold over the counter with no prescription needed, as a cure for absolutely everything. It made its inventor a fortune, and quietly made thousands of ordinary people dependent on it. Some rival brands were even worse, laced with prussic acid or nitroglycerin to undercut the price. It was still being dropped onto children’s tongues in the 1950s. No real warning ever came with the bottle.
