The Oscars are over, but we’re not done talking movies.

UATL Flowers is our series celebrating Black icons whose contributions to culture deserve more of their flowers. Today, we’re giving Curtis Mayfield his.

Stevie. Marvin. Al. Isaac.

Those are often the names that come up when people talk about the sound of the ’70s.

But Curtis Mayfield belongs in that conversation, too. His run in that era — four film soundtracks from 1972-76, plus multiple solo albums in the same decade — put him in a ‘70s stratosphere of his own.

And in the middle of it all, he was making Atlanta home.

AJC producer @keithlovelyjr sat down with UATL reporter and musicologist @journalistorian at @vinylparadiseatl to break down the genius behind the music and why it still hits.

The verdict: It’s time to give Curtis Mayfield his FLOWERS.
