Bright green eyes and a bright green hat to draw you in👒💚

David Hockney’s “Celia in a Green Hat” (1984) captures his longtime friend and fashion designer Celia Birtwell in a vibrant lithograph. At the time, Hockney was increasingly inspired by Henri Matisse, favoring expressive color and dramatic effect over strict realism.

In a 2020 interview with ITV News, Birtwell recalled Hockney telling her, “I don’t paint to flatter people, I paint what I see.” On what would have been Hockney’s 89th birthday, we’re celebrating an artist who, like Matisse, challenged viewers to see portraiture through a new lens.
