The game lived up to the billing from the opening series. Florida drove 59 yards to take a 7-0 lead on a Tim Tebow touchdown pass to Carl Moore, but Alabama answered immediately, with John Parker Wilson hitting freshman Julio Jones for a 64-yard gain that set up a Glenn Coffee touchdown run on the very next play. Alabama took its first lead late in the quarter on a Leigh Tiffin field goal. Florida responded with 10 unanswered points in the second quarter, including a field goal and a Tebow touchdown pass to David Nelson, to take a 17-10 lead into halftime. Alabama dominated the third quarter, running its ground-and-pound attack to perfection on a 15-play, 91-yard drive that ended in a Mark Ingram touchdown run to tie the game, then added a Tiffin field goal to lead 20-17 heading into the fourth. That is when Tebow took over. He directed a long touchdown drive that Jeffery Demps capped with a 1-yard score to put Florida back in front 24 to 20, and the Gators tacked on another fourth-quarter touchdown to seal it, outscoring Alabama 116 yards to the good in total offense over the final period. Tebow finished with 216 passing yards and three touchdowns, along with 57 rushing yards, earning MVP honors in front of a then-record Georgia Dome crowd of 75,892. The win gave Florida its seventh SEC title and sent the Gators to the BCS National Championship Game, where Tebow and company would go on to beat Oklahoma.
