LSU arrived in Atlanta banged up and distracted. Starting quarterback Matt Flynn was sidelined by an injury sustained in a triple-overtime loss to Arkansas the week before, forcing sophomore Ryan Perrilloux into the lineup. Reports also swirled that head coach Les Miles was about to leave for Michigan, a story he shot down with a Friday press conference confirming he was staying at LSU. Amid all the noise, the Tigers still had to go out and beat a Tennessee team that had won five straight games to close the season. Running back Jacob Hester, who topped 1,000 rushing yards on the season, ground out 120 yards on 23 carries to control the tempo, and Perrilloux was named the game's MVP. The win, LSU's third conference title in five years, pushed the Tigers to 11-2 and kept alive their improbable national title hopes.
