2005 SEC Championship Game: Georgia 34, LSU 14 | Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA. | December 3, 2005

Mark Richt's Georgia Bulldogs turned in a dominant performance against third-ranked LSU, winning 34- 14 to claim the program's second SEC title in four years. It was a bit of payback for the Bulldogs, who had lost the 2003 title game to the Tigers by nearly the same score.

Georgia jumped ahead early and never let go. D. J. Shockley, the senior quarterback who had spent much of his career backing up David Greene, threw touchdown passes of 45 and 29 yards to Sean Bailey, part of a first-quarter surge that staked the Bulldogs to a 14- 0 lead. A blocked punt by Bryan McClendon helped set up another Georgia score, and the Bulldogs carried a commanding 21-to-7 advantage into halftime. Shockley finished with 112 passing yards and two touchdowns, and also scored on the ground, and was named the game's MVP for his efforts.

LSU never found any rhythm against Georgia's defense, which held the high-powered Tigers to a mere 74 rushing yards and forced multiple turnovers. JaMarcus Russell was intercepted in the first quarter by DeMario Minter, and Tim Jennings later returned a Matt Flynn interception 15 yards for a touchdown after Russell left the game with a shoulder injury. LSU's only points came on a Russell rushing touchdown and a late Flynn to Dwayne Bowe scoring strike that did little to change the outcome.

Georgia's win, played in front of a crowd of 71,250 heavily dressed in red and black just 75 miles from Athens, secured the Bulldogs a spot in the Sugar Bowl, which had been relocated to the Georgia Dome after Hurricane Katrina forced it out of New Orleans. For LSU, the loss ended any lingering hope of a national title shot, especially after both Texas and USC dominated their own conference championship games earlier in the day. The 2005 title would be Georgia's last SEC football championship for more than a decade.
