Tennessee entered the game 10-1, riding high off its first outright SEC East title since the 1970s, and Casey Clausen had the Vols rolling early. After LSU grabbed a 7-0 lead, Clausen answered with touchdown passes to Kelley Washington and Troy Fleming, part of a 17-point second-quarter surge that put Tennessee in front 17-7. Things looked even better for the Vols when LSU quarterback Rohan Davey went down with a rib injury in the first half. That is when the game changed. In stepped Matt Mauck, a 22-year-old redshirt freshman and former minor league baseball player who had barely played all season. Mauck led LSU on a string of scoring drives in the second half, converting a third-and-goal for a rushing touchdown and directing multiple field goal drives to cut into Tennessee's lead. A 51-yard field goal by Tennessee's Alex Walls, the longest in SEC title game history at the time, briefly extended the Vols' cushion, but LSU kept chipping away. The turning point came in the fourth quarter. Tennessee receiver Donte Stallworth fumbled at the LSU 35, handing the ball right back to the Tigers. Mauck and running back Domanick Davis, who finished with 78 rushing yards, then drove LSU 65 yards in 13 plays, capped by Davis diving in from the 1-yard line on fourth-and-goal to put LSU ahead for good, 31 to 20, with 2:16 remaining. Tennessee's offense stalled out on the ensuing possession, and LSU ran out the clock to complete the improbable comeback. The win gave LSU its first SEC title since 1988 and first outright conference championship since 1986, punching the Tigers' ticket to the Sugar Bowl. For Tennessee, the loss ended any shot at the national championship.
