Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators returned to the top of the SEC in Atlanta, dismantling Tommy Tuberville's Auburn Tigers 28 to 6 for the program's first conference title since 1996, and their second lopsided win over Auburn in seven weeks, having already beaten them 38 to 7 during the regular season.

The game turned early on turnovers. Auburn's opening drive lasted one play before Ben Leard's completion to Reggie Worthy was fumbled away, recovered by Florida's Mike Nattiel at the Auburn 41. Rex Grossman needed just five plays to cash in, hitting Reche Caldwell for a first-quarter touchdown. Florida never looked back.

Grossman threw four touchdown passes on the day: two to Caldwell, one to Jabar Gaffney, and a third-quarter strike to Brian Haugabrook that put the game away. The Gators converted all three Auburn turnovers into points, building a 21-to-nothing lead before the Tigers found any rhythm.

Florida's defense matched the offense's efficiency. Nattiel added a second fumble recovery, and cornerback Lito Sheppard intercepted Leard twice. Auburn's only points came on two Damon Duval field goals.

The win pushed Florida to 10-2 overall, 8-1 in the SEC, and back to the Sugar Bowl for a second straight year. Spurrier summed up the moment with, "We've got the SEC championship for the year 2000. It's in the history books, and it's ours forever."
