LIVE REVIEW: You can always depend on Don Broco, no matter what.
Called upon just six days ago to replace Alkaline Trio as Thursday night headliners following the cancellation of their UK tour, the fact that they were at the forefront of the 2000trees’ mind clearly still making them feel very humbled, Bedford’s finest waste no time in demonstrating once more why they are the perfect way to close out any festival on any day you like.
Fresh offerings ‘Cellophane’ and ‘True Believers’ (complete with topically timely Hydration Break before the breakdown) are already stone-cold classics, whilst the sing-alongs that accompany ‘Come Out To LA’ and ‘Pretty’ are as passionate as they are powerful, a reminder of just how far back the relationship between band and fans go here. This is an instant and non-stop party; every joyous crowdsurf, widespread wall of death, and impassioned strut and saunter is dispatched with gusto and grins aplenty. Throw in some pretty hefty pyro during a belligerent ‘Gumshield’ and blinding white light throughout a soaring ‘One True Prince’, and you have an atmosphere that is as spine-tingling as it is unpredictable.
Between his croons and callous cries, Rob Damiani is oozing appreciation, not just for those giving their all before him but also for 2000trees for continuing to place so much trust in them to deliver. And it is because of the festival providing bands the space to develop into such worldbeaters that the goodwill to jump on an opportunity like this is second nature for Don Broco. And as the masses take their t-shirts off, and swing them around their heads as the night draws to a close, it’s clear that such respect and adoration flows on both sides of the barricade.
And you just know that if they were asked to play again tomorrow, they would do it in a heartbeat.
