Most people argue about STIs based on whichever one they grew up watching in WRC clips. Here's a more honest breakdown.

1. The GC/GM chassis was never supposed to be a street car — it was a homologation special that happened to have plates. Raw, unfiltered, and still the benchmark for mechanical feel in a turbo AWD sedan.

2. The GD generation is where Subaru figured out the formula. Wider body, better brakes, and enough presence to make it iconic without trying. The blobeye-to-hawkeye run might be the single best stretch any Japanese performance car has ever had.

3. The GR hatchback was polarizing but underrated. Stiffer chassis, wider track, and that five-door made it more usable than any STI before it. The people who hated it in 2008 are paying $35K for clean ones now.

4. The VA got comfortable — nicer interior, better daily manners, but it lost some of that raw edge that made earlier cars special. Still a proper STI under the skin, just wearing a nicer suit.

5. The real ranking isn't about which one was fastest. It's about which one made you feel the most connected to the road. And that conversation always circles back to the earlier cars for a reason.

Every generation had its moment. Know the history before you buy into the hype.
