If it feels like New England summers now skip straight from chilly rain to unbearable humidity, this forecast may confirm your suspicions.

According to AccuWeather, the transition into true summer warmth across Boston and the Northeast is expected to happen more slowly than usual this year. 

But hang tight, as hotter conditions could build significantly later in the season.

Forecasters say Boston is expected to see a near-average or above-average number of 90-degree days this summer, with the potential for a major late-summer heat and humidity surge, especially in August.

The report also notes that warmer overnight temperatures can become especially brutal in cities because of the “urban heat island effect,” where concrete and buildings trap heat long after sunset.

The good news? Meteorologists say a possible “super El Niño” pattern developing this year could help reduce Atlantic hurricane activity later in the season.
