The grass under the 2026 World Cup was engineered for seven years before a single ball was kicked. FIFA mandates natural, living grass for every match, but eight of the sixteen host stadiums were built for American football with artificial turf, and five of those have roofs that starve a pitch of sunlight. The fix was not to grow grass in place but to grow it a thousand miles away and ship it in.

Turfgrass scientists at the University of Tennessee and Michigan State spent years working out which cultivar survives which climate, then how to grow, move and root it fast enough to play elite football within days of installation.

The grass itself is grown as sod, a carpet of turf raised on plastic sheeting rather than soil. Growing on plastic is the clever part: roots cannot anchor into the ground, so the whole pitch peels up in clean rolls and travels without being torn apart.

Different venues, different grass:

- Warm sites use Bermudagrass bred for heat
- Cool or low-light sites use Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass
- Roofed stadiums use a low-light variety native to the British Isles, propped up by grow lights

Most sod was planted between March and June of last year, then harvested and driven in refrigerated trucks so the grass stays dormant and cool in transit. One SoFi Stadium pitch made a nineteen-hour, 1,600-mile haul from a farm in Washington state. Crews stitch the rolls together on site, sometimes days before kickoff. Some pitches are less than two weeks old when the world watches them.

A lawn you can roll up, drive across a continent and play a World Cup final on within a fortnight.
