That pitchside advertising board isn’t showing one ad. Depending on where you’re watching, it’s showing four completely different ones at the same instant, and your eyes will never catch it.

The trick is called parallel advertising, and it exploits the gap between how a camera sees and how you see. A standard broadcast camera doesn’t capture continuous motion. It samples the world in discrete frames, its shutter synchronised (genlocked) to a fixed timing signal. A modern LED perimeter board can refresh far faster than any single camera samples, which opens a door.

Here’s the mechanism:

- The LED board cycles through up to four separate advertisements in rapid succession, interleaving them frame by frame at frequencies beyond human flicker fusion (~50-60 Hz).
- Each broadcast camera is phase-locked to a different slice of that cycle, so it only ever records one of the four streams.
- A feed bound for Brazil captures the Portuguese-language ad; a feed for Japan captures its own; a stadium spectator’s retina simply integrates all four into an unremarkable blur.

Nobody is digitally overlaying anything here. The hardware physically emits four truthful images, and each observer is tuned to a different one. It is the same principle behind a strobe freezing a spinning fan, weaponised for sponsorship.

An earlier generation leaned on infrared instead: boards emitted an IR mask invisible to spectators but readable by fitted cameras, letting broadcasters cross-fade regional replacements. Virtual advertising first appeared in football at the 2015 Audi Cup in Munich; the Bundesliga now runs up to five regional feeds per match.

The board in the stadium tells the truth. It just tells a different truth to every camera pointed at it.
