🇰🇬🛰 How can space-based information better support national disaster risk management in Kyrgyzstan? The Technical Advisory Mission (TAM) carried out by UNOOSA’s UN-SPIDER programme to the Kyrgyz Republic has successfully concluded. Hosted by the Ministry of Emergency Situations from 8–10 July, the mission brought together representatives from government institutions, academia and international organizations to assess current capacities and identify opportunities to strengthen the use of satellite data and geospatial information across the disaster management cycle.

Over the three days, the mission focused on:

📍 Day 1: Reviewing Kyrgyzstan's disaster risk management framework, institutional coordination and governance for geospatial information.

📍 Day 2: Assessing technical capacities, Earth observation data, hazard monitoring and operational applications for floods, landslides, earthquakes, drought and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

📍 Day 3: Validating findings, identifying priorities and developing recommendations to strengthen the operational use of space-based information.

Some of the key discussions included:

🛰️ Improving access to high-resolution satellite imagery and elevation data for hazard and risk assessments.

🤝 Strengthening coordination and data sharing between institutions involved in disaster risk management.

🎓 Building long-term national capacity through education, training and knowledge exchange.

🌍 Expanding the use of Earth observation to support early warning, preparedness and emergency response.

The findings of this mission will now inform a set of recommendations to support future collaboration between the Ministry of Emergency Situations, national stakeholders, and UNOOSA's UN-SPIDER programme.

Finally, a special thanks to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, all participating institutions and the members of the international expert team for their excellent collaboration and hospitality throughout the mission.
