🏡 In the middle of Jim Crow, Black Atlantans quietly bought a thousand acres and built their own dream suburb — designed by Black architects, financed by Black banks, for Black families. It’s called Collier Heights.

Locked out of white neighborhoods by segregation and redlining, the city’s Black leaders devised a plan they code-named “Project X,” acquiring farmland on Atlanta’s west side that had been dismissed as undesirable — then building one of the first upscale communities in the nation created by and for African Americans.

A few things the video didn’t have room for: the homes were built with huge basement “recreation rooms” precisely because Black families were barred from white restaurants, hotels, and bowling alleys — one home reportedly has an entire indoor bowling alley. In 2009 it became the first neighborhood in the country built by and for Black Americans to make the National Register of Historic Places. And the residents were a who’s who — Dr. King’s parents, Herman Russell, Jasmine Guy, and even a couple of Atlanta’s mayors.
