July 12th is National Paper Bag Day! It is a day that commemorates when William Goodale received his patent on this day in 1859. His patent was designed to cut the paper bag in a way that it was ready for folding. 

For today, Channey letterpress printed our museum logo and contact information on brown paper bags using a 4x6 Golding Official No. 2 tabletop printing press. About 120 bags were printed on this press run using red rubber base ink. These bags were printed for our museum store.

When it comes to letterpress printing, you have other print options than just a piece of paper. When it comes to printing something like paper bags, it can actually be pretty difficult due to layers. Having a good impression requires making sure the make ready can accommodate the different thicknesses of the bag.
