"Two hedge fund guys buy a mine. What could go wrong?” says James Litinsky, CEO of MP Materials. The answer: a lot. Litinsky and Michael Rosenthal bought the Mountain Pass mine in 2017. At the time, it was underwater, financially and literally. There were 30 million gallons that had puddled at the bottom. But they got the mine back up and running – blasting earth, then crushing rocks into gravel, then milling it into fine powder.
