🔴 Srebrenica Genocide

➝ On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces under Ratko Mladic captured Srebrenica, a town declared a UN-protected safe area.

➝ Thousands of Bosniak civilians who sought refuge at the Dutch UN peacekeeper base were systematically handed over to the invading forces.

➝ While women and children were forcibly sent to Bosniak-controlled territory, at least 8,372 Bosniak men and boys were brutally executed in forests, factories, and warehouses

➝ To hide the evidence of this massive atrocity, the perpetrators buried the victims in dozens of mass graves scattered throughout the region

➝ In 2007, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) officially ruled this systematic massacre as a genocide, based on extensive tribunal evidence

➝ Every year on July 11, the remains of victims recovered from these hidden sites and identified through DNA analysis are laid to rest at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery

➝ So far, 6,772 victims have been buried at the Potocari memorial site, alongside 250 others laid to rest in local cemeteries at their families' request

➝ As forensic teams continue to exhume remains from over 150 locations and 77 mass graves, more than 1,000 victims of the genocide still remain missing
