Thanks to my daughter, addisoneyandle, I’ve watched so much Love Island USA the last two weeks that I’ve started taking PR notes.

Since it’s summer time, we’ve had appointment streaming almost every night. It’s either On Patrol: Live or loveislandusa. I know, go ahead and prepare our Parents of the Year trophy now.

A 20-year career in PR will ruin reality TV for you. Ask aeyandle how many times I will pause Real Housewives of Rhode Island to ask a PR or crisis question. I can’t watch a single episode without my brain thinking about a crisis communications plan if I or my kids were on reality TV.

We kicked off our ☀️ vacation last week with the first “Movie Night” episode. Naturally, I jotted down six things I’ve witnessed that the villa can teach us about communications:

🎭 Authenticity wins, even on a dating show. Audiences (and reporters, and stakeholders) can tell when something’s manufactured. Same rules apply outside the villa.

👣 Your digital footprint lives forever. Old tweets, old texts, old situationships will all resurface at the worst possible moment. Assume everything is searchable, because eventually, it is.

📊 Winning public perception beats winning the game. The game has a winner. Public opinion has a longer memory.

🔮 Future-proof yourself. Before you hit send, post, or make the move, ask if the you 10 years from now is going to be fine with it.

👀 You never know who is watching. Your clients, your boss, your future employer, and yes, your crisis comms person are all in the audience. Act accordingly.

❤️ Don’t be an awful human. This one shouldn’t require a panel, a strategist, or a crisis comms plan. And yet, every season, someone needs it. Being a decent human being is still the cheapest reputation management there is.

In six weeks, Addison’s off to college, and we’ll be down a co-pilot for these appointment-viewing nights. Until then, I’ll be on the couch, taking PR notes that absolutely no one asked for.
