At first glance, it seems impossible.

If Earth is a sphere, why don't we see the curve when we look at the horizon? 🌍

Many people imagine that standing on Earth should feel like standing on a giant ball where the curvature is obvious everywhere.

But the reality is far more interesting.

The reason you can't easily see Earth's curvature is because Earth is extremely large.

With a diameter of about 12,742 km, the amount of surface that curves away beneath your eyes is very small over normal viewing distances. Even from a tall building or a mountain, the curve is subtle because you are only seeing a tiny fraction of the planet's surface.

Another factor is perspective.

Your eyes can only detect curvature when the viewing distance and height are large enough. On a beach, a road, or an open field, the horizon is too close relative to Earth's size for the curve to be obvious.

But when you go high enough — such as in high-altitude aircraft, from the edge of space, or through specially designed observations — the curvature becomes much easier to notice.

There are also other signs of Earth's shape that don't depend on seeing the horizon curve, like ships disappearing bottom-first over the horizon, Earth's shadow during lunar eclipses, and the way stars change as you travel across different latitudes.

The planet beneath our feet is so enormous that its curve hides in plain sight.

Sometimes the biggest things in the universe are the hardest to notice...

Not because they aren't there,

but because our everyday perspective is simply too small to reveal them. 🌎✨
